Hi Bobby,
This is curious. 3D gradient shimming has always in the past been available at no charge in TopSpin. It is definitely a useful feature at any point where the probe has been worked on, and when it is being first installed. It is easy to use, and does a good job. We use it regularly to help us update our saved shims, something we do about monthly. It is from those saved shims that we then do the 1D gradient shimming on the in-between. The key here is that it pulls in good values for the non-axial (non-Z) shims. These can be very hard to manually shim in. Back in the old days, it would take 1-2 days to shim in a new probe. Now it takes maybe an hour. Updating a shim set used to take me an hour or more (especially if the probe had been repaired); now 30 min, most of which I can be in my office doing something else. So the 3D shim routine (takes about 20 mins) presents a huge time savings, and greatly assists in keeping line shape specs in an on-going manner.
We will also use it on "tough" samples on occasion, when they're in proteo solvents. The most common case would be a protein in H2O:D2O where the water suppression just isn't as good as we're hoping for.
I'll certainly be interested if Bruker has really separated this out and is charging for 3D shimming. It is obviously something we would want, and therefore something I recommend you get, if it's not too expensive. I guarantee that the installation engineer will use it when installing your probe.

Hello
College of the Holy Cross is currently writing a grant for a new NMR (400
or 500 MHz). 3D gradient shimming is available from Bruker as an upgrade.
Is 3D gradient shimming the future of shimming?
Does anyone have 3D gradient shimming on a 500 MHz instrument? If so, what
are the added benefits?
Thank you,
