As an old gunslinger shimmer, I hate to admit it but yes...you'll want gradient shimming.
When Bruker bought GE, I told Boban John that Frank Laukien was asking why we needed 3-axis gradients and what he could do with them that he couldn't do with a Z-axis gradient.
Boban said jokingly..."well he could gradient shim"...
A few years later Ralph Hurd made it work and the rest is history...

Subject: AMMRL: 3D Gradient Shimming
Hello
College of the Holy Cross is currently writing a grant for a new NMR (400 or 500 MHz). 3D gradient shimming is available from Bruker as an upgrade.
Is 3D gradient shimming the future of shimming?
Does anyone have 3D gradient shimming on a 500 MHz instrument? If so, what are the added benefits?
Thank you,
Bobby Kennedy
