Hello Victoria,
Just to clarify, the two models of sample-changer are the SampleCase,
which has 24 sample positions, and the SampleCasePlus, which can hold up
to 60-samples. As you said, the 60-sample model has three rings.
We have both models, and we have been quite pleased with them. In general
we have found these to be extremely reliable. They require twice yearly
maintenance which is described in the owners manual. This maintenance
involves cleaning and lubricating the horizontal bar where the sample is
transported, and replacing an o-ring. We do this ourselves, and it takes
about 15-minutes.
We did encounter an issues with one of our SampleCases: we needed to
replace part of the pneumatic control system when an o-ring buried deep
inside the controller failed. I think this failure was the exception,
as neither of the other two systems have experienced this failure.
The SampleCase (24) is the simpler system. If you expect that room for
24-samples will meet your needs, then I would advise going with that.
That said, we are extremely pleased with the performance of the
SampleCasePlus (60). This is by far the spectrometer with the highest
volume of sample throughput, and it has been working like a charm for 3+ years.
One thing to consider: we have several users who work with air/water
sensitive samples who use the "J-Young" type NMR tubes. By default,
adding the valve system to an NMR tube makes them too long to work with
either the SampleCase or SampleCasePlus. We ended up having to replace
the longer J-Young tubes with shorter ones. These have been working fine.
For me, the biggest selling point of the SampleCase and SampleCasePlus
sample changers is that they are located about a meter above the floor.
Users no longer need to climb up and down ladders to insert/remove
samples. I never realized how important that was until I saw it, and it
is excellent for accessibility.
Cheers,
Bob.
