I am writing to inform the NMR community of the sudden and unexpected death of
my former friend and colleague, Donald G. Davis, at age 57. Beyond Don's
well-deserved reputation as a spectroscpist's spectroscopist, Don was an
energizing force who charged up any activity that he was involved in. His
maddening and stimulating refusal to accept almost any established concept was
a continuing challenge and a source of enlightenment to all those who
interacted with him. Statements of utter outrageousness were peppered with
penetrating insights which would stop us in our tracks as we tried to absorb
their implications. His absence leaves a big void.
Anyone wishing to contribute to his memory can make a contribution to the
Benjamin Tucker Davis Scholarship fund c/o Office of Development, Lehigh
University, Bethlehem, PA 18015, set up in memory of his son.
