You have the right idea on Faraday Shield vs. a steel box. We have
found that a steel box around the monitor gives moderate success. Even
better would be a box of mu metal (high magnetic permeability iron), but
not every shop can work with mu metal. You might check with IBM, that they
may have such a shield available, that fits inside the case, around the
CRT.
If you want to fabricate one off-campus, I might be able to come up with
a source.
