Dear AMMRL Colleagues,
On behalf of Profs. Jeffrey Glenn and Joseph Puglisi, could you please
post/forward this postdoctoral position opportunity to any interested
candidates?
Thank you so much and Happy Thanksgiving,
--Corey Liu
Postdoctoral Position in Peptide/Protein NMR
The Glenn Laboratory (Prof. Jeffrey Glenn, Stanford University School
of Medicine, Department of Medicine – Gastroenterology and Hepatology)
is seeking a Postdoctotal Scholar to conduct research using high-
resolution solution-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR)
spectroscopy to examine the structure and function determinants
protein domains of phosphoinositides. This study is sponsored by a 5-
year NIH award for studying chemical approaches to target validation
for drug resistant pathogens, in this case HCV.
Research Program: Research work will be done in collaboration with
Prof. Joseph Puglisi (Department of Structural Biology) and Dr. Corey
Liu (Stanford Magnetic Resonance Laboratory). Prior work has
established that the target domain peptide is readily studied by NMR
using various membrane mimetics. We will extend this work to compare
the structures of wild-type and mutant domain peptide with target and
control phosphoinositides. NMR will include standard two-dimensional
proton homonuclear experiments on chemically synthesized peptides. We
also seek to produce 13C/15N isotopically enriched peptides to enable
use of heteronuclear multi-dimensional bio-NMR experiments to enhance
and expedite NMR analysis.
Background: The Glenn lab has discovered a novel phosphoinositide
binding motif within an HCV protein. This motif mediates specific
interaction with specific phosphoinositides, and point mutations in
the domain abrogate phosphoinositide binding and HCV RNA replication.
This has exciting implications with respect to the role of the protein
in the HCV life cycle, HCV’s interaction with its host cell, and the
use of chemical inhibitors of the protein to enable the design of
novel therapeutic approaches against HCV and a wide array of other
potential pathogens.
Qualifications: M.D. and/or Ph.D. in a biologically relevant area and
experience with the following:
1) Solution-state bio-NMR of peptides/proteins and substrate binding
interactions.
2) Cloning/over-expression of challenging peptides/proteins in E. coli
for purposes of uniform isotopic labeling and/or specific amino-acid
isotopic labeling.
3) A publication record demonstrating productive use of the above
methods, a strong interest in biomedical research, and a demonstrated
ability to deal with complex biological problems.
If interested, please send a CV, cover letter and two letters of
recommendation to: puglisi_at_stanford.edu and liuc_at_stanford.edu
