      If a quench should occur with the shorting plug removed, the
superconducting switches would likely be destroyed. With the plug
installed, there is an alternate current path and the switches usually
survive. A secondary effect is that the plug prevents ice from forming on
the receptacle, which might block the sockets; it's much easier and safer
to remove ice from the shorting plug.
