Dear all,
We are in the process of relocating our NMRs to a new building and we have
encountered an unexpected problem, work safety are telling us that we cannot
transport the liquid helium dewars on foot or by vehicle (they do not have
the right vehicle for transporting dewars of liquid helium) from the helium
liquefaction unit to the new building where the NMRs will be housed. Previously
I just rolled the dewars a few hundred meters from the helium liquefaction unit
to the old location, as what the chemistry people do though they have much
further to travel (but they are a different institution and never cross a public
road as we will have to). Previously when I was in Finland (am now in Germany)
there was never such problems with the transportation of liquid helium dewars.
So:
1. What are the problems/issues that people have had with work safety regarding
the transportation of small-sized liquid helium dewars (e.g. 100 L) across campus
and how have you been able to overcome them ?
2. Does anyone know anything about the special vehicles used to transport small-sized
liquid helium dewars and the problems of crossing public roads ?
3. What other constraints have people had with liquid helium issues from work
safety and how have they dealt with them ?
Many thanks in advance if you have any input or advice on this matter. I will
produce a summary of responses if it is meaningful.
Kind regards,
Karel Klika
