AMMRL: Summary of BioNMR facility usage

Thanks to all who replied to my query last week: Chris, Genevieve, Bin, Xinfeng, Martha, Sarah, Sameer, Tianzhi, Brendan, Dean, Dmitry, Ryan, and Ed. All but one response came from North America.

A few things came out that will not be apparent from the table. One is that many of the responses I got were from facilities shared with chemists and/or solids although most of the managers did give me the percentage of bio NMR time. A second is that several facilities are rather heavy on solid state bio NMR. One other recurring theme is that there are fewer bio users than there were in the past, and several comments pointed to lack of funding driving this. One user even mentioned having no bio NMR usage in over a decade.

Here’s the raw, anonymized data in a rough table sorted by usage. If the formatting gets messed up, the data is simply text with tabs as spacers.

# instruments # cryoprobes # of groups using bio NMR usage other notes

3 3 7 ~100%
3 3 2 ~95%
2 ? 2 90%
5 4 ? 90% 800 & 900 MHz national facility, lower field usage not given
1 1 2 75-85% includes bio solids
2 0 1 75% includes bio solids
2 2 2 60-70%
2 1 1 50-75% shared with others
1 1 1 30-70% 1 group, but many collaborators
3 1 3 20-60%
1 1 1 ~25% shared with others
2 2 1 ~10% shared with others, many non-bio instruments
2 2 6 ~5% shared with others, bio users have no funding
