cryoprobes in routine use

Dear All,

Last October, Rich Shoemaker asked about the pros and cons of the use
of cryoprobes in open access facilities. I am wondering if anyone has
any new experience since then?

We are discussing the options of applying for a new 600, which will
offer some s/n and dispersion gains over our existing 500s, or
applying for a 500 with a cryoprobe. The latter would offer a larger
s/n gain than a 600, for perhaps a similar price, but would the
operational headaches be too great? Users could be limited to a
subset of the 170 or so currently working, but the machine would be
in the room as the current instruments and so there would be some
traffic.

Thanks for your help,

Phil.
