Dear all,
Thanks to all who have replied to my earlier email this month asking for
help in installing a network printer HPLJ4050N. While most people
suggested getting HP JET DIRECT Print installer from the HP website, I
followed Guenter Hirtz's advice. I learned from him that Varian's
"makePrinter" provides a filter to prevent "staircase" printing, and it has
to be activated in the /printers/printserver.conf file. I needed to add a
line "type1_ps" to this file for our postscript printer. After this I
called up "makePrinter" and it gave 3 choices under server: local, remote
and printserver. I chose printserver. Define the printservr's hostname as
in /etc/hosts, select /dev/null as port. After this printing in vnmr is
fine.
In addition, on the printer, I should bring up print quality menu and set
"APPEND CR to LF=NO"
To print in a shelltool, type vnmrprint filename printername.
Hope this will help those who has the same problem.

Dear all,
We have a new INOVA600 with a Sun computer and running on VNMR 6.1C/Solaris
7. We need to install a network printer/plotter to the system. This is a
HPLJ4050N network postscript printer with its own IP address, not connected
to any host computer. I have not been able to set up printer correctly.
Plotting is fine. I have tried all the device types listed in the Add
Printer/Plotter window and they don't work. The result is always two lines
on top of the printout with shifted indent instead of a full page. I have
also installed "makePrinter" downloaded from Varian website and using it to
install didn't work either.
Any suggestions and hints would be appreciated.
