We have had a site license for MNova (first 150 seats, now unlimited) for many
years. We split the cost between the facility and the undergraduate teaching
labs. It is not so bad when spread out over multiple years, and they are
typically generous with discounts if you have been a subscriber for many
years. (Last time we renewed we did 5-year renewal and came out to $1800/year,
which we split with the teaching labs.) We just roll it into our user fees -
it's not a separate fee. We calculate the user fees based on the portion of
salaries we have to cover, instrument maintenance, cryogens, etc. We have
been doing this for over a decade now so I can't really speak to whether our
usage has increased due to this cost. Based on feedback from users, it is
more likely to increase their usage because they are more easily able to
analyze/process their data on their own PCs, and that helps them decide the
next set of experiments, and facilitates research discussions with their PIs
or lab members. We have about 150-170 active "seats" at any time, although
I no longer manage the license server, because our Univ IT made us move it
to a centralized computer system. Anyways, $12-15 per user license per year
really is a good bargain for us. We don't pay for any of the extra modules,
just NMR processing.
