The PTS-160 synthesizers can easily be equipped with thumbwheels to set the
frequency manually. Cherry and others make BCD coded thumbwheels. Make sure to
use the correct units to code for BCD to a common contact that is tied low,
pulling the appropriate lines of each digit low when activated. On the PTS-160,
the high order digit uses all 16 codes, so a special hex coded switch must be
used. I don't know how the coding for the highest digits of the PTS-250 are
done. Some variations on these switches have small levers which make setting
them very easy. The block of thumbwheels is mounted in the blank front panel of
the synthesizer. A ribbon cable is soldered to the switch contacts, and can be
routed inside the enclosure, out under the top panel at the rear, and terminated
in a 50 contact Amphenol ribbon connector which plugs into the programming
connector.
Cheers,
Jerry
