PTS-250 knob retrofit

A faculty member here at LSU would like to retrofit a newer model PTS-250
synthesizer with knobs on the front so that frequencies could be dialed in
by hand. Has anyone ever heard of doing such a thing? My contact at PTS
say that they don't do this sort of thing; you have to buy the synthesizer
that comes with the knobs already installed. I would appreciate any
comments or suggestions.
