I guess I am not sure what that statement means.

If someone has been sending mail to select members of the AMMRL list, it
is possible that the addresses came from the archives. The AMMRL archives
are on a gopher site available to anyone who cares to look. Other
possibilities are other mail lists and Usenet news groups. Of course,
anyone who has a copy of the membership list (which means anyone who is a
member) _could_ provide that list to someone else. But why? A message
important enough to send to the membership is important enough to attach
one's name to. Besides, it is a lot easier to send mail to ammrl@
bloch... than to send it individually to each of the members.

The only way to stop receiving junk email is to not have an email address.

There are commercial mail programs available that will sort incoming mail
into folders. Presumably one could direct some mail to be deleted without
ever seeing it.
