I am seeking information on the various methods used in data storage. We will
soon be under going a change in our computer system and are looking for the
best method for permanently archiving data from NMR's, MS's, FTIR's, and
so on. Below are some of the points I am curious about.

- How is the data stored after it is acquired
- How is it permanently archived, when, where, and by whom
- How is the data retrieved, is it online or offline
- What file naming scheme is used
- Is a database kept (filename, user, sample ID, etc...)
- Is the archived data considered "validated" in a legal sense
- If the data is "validated", how is this accomplished

We are concerned about needing to use archived data to support patents, IND
and NDA applications, and other such things.

Please send your replies to me directly, see below. I will post a summary
of the responses when all the results are in.
