boot -ar was the solution. Kevin Geohring of Revolution NMR and Ghirmai Meresi of Agilent both suggested it. Thanks also to Edwin Rivera and Josh Kurutz for suggestions. Life is GOOD with AMMRL!
Have a great weekend, -Hirsch

Subject: AMMRL: Varian/Chemagnetics Infinity host won't boot
We had an unexpected power glitch today which took down our Varian/Chemagnetics Infinity host Sun Blade100. I cannot get the host to boot at all. When it first came up, it stated that the filesystem was bad, which I expected, so I ran fsck -y twice. Now when I boot, it hangs up with the message "Cannot open '/etc/path_to_inst'" and gives the choices of 'boot', 'go', or 'login'. The only choice that gets anywhere is 'login', which puts you into single-user mode after entering the firmware password. I'm stuck there. Any advice is appreciated.
Cheers, -Hirsch
