I have summarized the various replies for my UPS query.

1. Batteries need to be replaced every 3 to 4 years. It is normal.

2. Some like Powerware and others don't. US Tech. was another vendor mentioned for
buying new UPS systems.

3. For new UPS systems, the price was in the range of $2,500 irrespective of the kVa
range needed for NMR spectrometers. 3.2 kVa - 6 kVa costs about the same. It will
give about 20 min of backup power.

4. Newer UPS systems have lower battery replacement costs as well as easier to
replace.

5. In general, UPS systems lasts for a long time (20 years or more).

For our system, we replaced the 6 batteries at a cost of $600. This time we got a
discount of 50% on the battery price. Next time, we probably would buy a new UPS as
the price of batteries for these older systems may become prohibitively expensive!

Thanks for all the replies.
