3'rd party Sun upgrades

We've apparently been hacked, so I am preparing to do a clean install of
Solaris. This would be an opportune time to upgrade to solaris 8, for
which a bit more memory and disk space are recommended. I was surprised to
discover that a 20 Gb disk and 128 Mb of memory from Sun would cost just a
bit more than a new Sun computer with those components in it. (A
favorable alternative, but will be the first time I picked up a brand new
Sun computer because it was cheaper than a cardboard box!).

Has anyone any experience with putting EIDE drives sold on for PC's into a
Sun Ultra 5 or 10?
Has anyone tried third party memory in the Ultra?

PS Any notes, warnings, or advice from people who have done the install
process would be welcome.
Also about TCP wrappers and secure shell; how to implement a list of
which remote users may log in from where.
I'll post a "security for dummies" summary at the end of this adventure.
