Job Description: Avery Dennison (Fortune 500 company) is looking for a
skilled team leader in spectroscopy who is able to deploy deep expertise
to address product (adhesive laminates of soft polymers and films) and
process related R&D challenges leveraging demonstrated skills and strength
using NMR tools. This position resides within the Materials Science and
Characterization (MSC) Group located in Mentor, OH.

• Be the subject matter expert in Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

• Lead experimental investigations using appropriate NMR spectroscopic
techniques (solution and solid-state, homo/heteronuclear multidimensional
analysis, solvent suppression, etc.) to solve challenging problems in the
fields of chemistry, material science, and engineering that are important
to Avery Dennison. Primary focus will be to characterize & study
macromolecules, additives and catalysts.

• Lead the Spectroscopy Lab and closely collaborate with team members
(Chemists, Engineers, end users) situated globally (US, Europe, Asia &
South America) to provide timely problem solving solutions

• Pro-actively initiate and execute upon relevant R&D projects and
proposals

• Constantly seek to bring in new characterization techniques and depth in
understanding of the underlying Material Science in areas of interest

• Develop and implement test methods to support new product/process
development projects and discern structure-property relationships when
possible

• Direct and supervise staff to maintain an array of instruments
(NMR/FTIR/Raman/UV-Vis) including scheduling /supervision of cryogen
magnet maintenance

• Manage budget and track deliverables


Minimum Requirements : 5 or more years of experience in applied NMR
spectroscopy

• Ph. D. in Organic Chemistry, Organometallics, Polymer Materials,
Analytical Science or related disciplines; or MS degree with equivalent
experience and relevance

• Proven expertise in the field supported by technical publications and
presentations

• Broad knowledge in statistical methods and their successful application
- experience in Chemometrics desirable

• Proficiency in troubleshooting instrument malfunctions through hardware
and software

• Excellent problem-solving skills via small molecule and polymer
structure elucidations

• Knowledge and experience in leveraging spectroscopy towards optimum
polymer synthesis (emulsion, hot melt and solvent based materials)

• Good organization and planning skills; ability to handle multiple
projects/tasks simultaneously

• Demonstrated experience in validating analytical test methods

• Knowledge of running design of experiments, relevant computer
programming and six sigma desirable

• Effective written and oral communications

• High levels of motivation, initiative and energy

• Able to work independently as well as in a team
