It depends whether you are using completely
sealed 'gell cells' or the larger 'automobile type'
batteries.
If you are using the automobile style batteries then
I can heartily recommend the lead-calcium version.
They are maintenance free and the big plus is that
they have a much lower charge-acceptance at full
charge than the conventional lead-acid automobile
battery. This means that electrolyte loss due to
dissociation of water at full charge is effectively
eliminated making them truly maintenance free.
I have a set which have run for 5 years without
attention in a 5 kVA UPS supporting our Avance
400. I will be happy to supply details to you and
any other member who is interested. They cost
about 25% more than standard automobile low
maintenance batteries of the same ampere-hour
capacity but there is nor comparison. They are
truly maintenance free and there is no significant
out-gassing of acidic vapours.
