Dear All,

I have an antique Bruker 200MHz NMR with a beautiful magnet and probes
that work well but still fitted with the original computer system (An
Aspect 3000) and the most recent version of the software (DISNMR94). I
am hoping that someone out there remembers how this beast is put
together to help with a problem we are having with running the
intrument! In summary of the problem, the computer froze while I was
processing a spectrum so I rebooted the computer. Now it is stuck with
an interupt prohibiting it from entering the software protocols. Below
is a summary of what we have seen.

        At power-up of the Aspect 3000:
        all power supplys' lamps are on;
        program counter is zero;
        accumulator is 67377777;
        AND INTERRUPT REQUEST 5 (IRQ 5) IS STEADY/ON

        Attempting to reboot from the ADAKOS disk allowed me to run
through all the setup from the keyboard, but as soon as I
answered the last question the system hung up again with the IRQ 5 light
on. Pressing any other key on the keyboard lit the IRQ 6 light
indicating that the system sees the keyboard but is lost somewhere
before this.

        Pressing console START:
        DSKR and DSKW lamps momentarily light;
        program counter is running;
        accumulator is all zeros;
        green RUN lamp is on;
        INTERRUPT REQUEST 5 IS STEADY/ON;
        AND PENDING INTERRUPT 5 IS STEADY/ON

        Pressing any keyboard character:
        INTERRUPT REQUEST 6 LIGHTS TO A STEADY/ON;
        and all else stays the same, but no response is evident.

So the big question is what is on interrupt 5 that is not answering its
request for service? In reviewing the manuals it seems that this IRQ
light is reserved for the keyboard input and output as well as the
printers and plotters. All are on line and responding when we power
them up!

I am desperately confused as to what to do next so if you have any ideas
or suggestions, please share your knowledge or thoughts.

In light of the many issues that the age of this computer gives us (such
as 8" floppy disks and computer cards the size of current laptops!) I
would like to upgrade from the current computer system to one that is a
little less prone to power failures, has higher speed and will be able
to actually PROCESS a 2D spectrum! I have had several people recommend
the TECH MAG upgrade. Any suggestions or advice as to this course of
action?

Thank you, in advance, for your help!

Sincerely,

Allison Calhoun
