I'm just now digging out my office and came upon the August 16 issue of
C&EN with its annual employment and salary data. In the past, NMR salaries
have matched well with the numbers in the table "Salaries of All Chemists
by Experience" under the heading "Academia, 24 years since bachelors degree."
That would be about $62,000 right now. This is significantly lower than the
$64,750 that would be predicted by multiplying our 2001 mean of $59,259 by
1.03^3 so low inflation and economic declines have apparently limited
raises lately. I think I got 2%, 0%, and 3% myself.
If these declines continue, I may someday make an average salary!
Unless the membership desires, I don't see a need for a fresh survey of
AMMRL members. As always, I remain available to write letters for people
seeking to hire NMR professionals or for colleagues trying to argue for a
higher salary.
According to the table, I should be making about $67,000 now. Can anyone
write a letter for me?
Best wishes for a fulfilling holiday season.
