RE: Wired SGI problem...

This summer one of our O2 began complaining about one of its 32 Mb memory modules. I pulled the pair
of 32 Mb modules and replaced it with a pair of recommended 128 Mb cards from www.crucial.com. The
memory was so cheap, a few weeks later I ordered another pair of 128 Mb modules (the price had
dropped!) for our other O2. In this second system, this 3rd-party memory co-exists with the original
SGI memory. The original memory is installed in slots 1 and 2 and the Crucial memory is in slots 3
and 4. Both O2 systems have been working fine since the upgrade.

I experienced the problem also on an O2 _without_ two ethernet cards (as
far as I know), i.e. a 'standalone' but networked, or not, O2.

This agrees with my experience not only of SGI, but also of the company
selling the 3rd party memory 'especially for SGI O2'. Must be some
bus/timing difference between the chips? In any case the SGI memory was
archived on the shelf. Long term storage with 'warning labels' ("SGI
inside").

Have a good day.
