SUMMARY: magnet refurbish

Thanks so much to all who wrote! There were about 30 replies to my question
of whether I should go for seal replacements on my 11-year-old Oxford 500/51
as part of a console upgrade. I had reported that I have not noticed any
increase in liquid helium consumption and was using about 55L every ninety
days to top off both my 500/51 and my 300/89.

About 40% of you said that I would have to do it sooner or later, so might
as well do it now while it can be budgeted. The rest said if it ain't broke,
don't fix it. I am going the latter route. However, if I were moving or had
some reason to warm the thing up, I would certainly take the opportunity to
replace the seals.

It is certainly advantageous when negotiating with administration to be able
to say, "I have advice from 30 colleagues on this and..." !
