Hello,

I had an renovation and after this also a translation of my NMRs into a new place.

We used our AC 250's and DRX600 also during the renovation. We had a wooden hut in the building - with some stuff to keep the temperature in there stable. Making a big noise.

We had some troubles, with overheating the huts and also a not safely closed water valve dropping down directly on my spectrometer. The HPPR/2 HF-boxes are covered with water the next Monday morning. One of the constructers has to pay for the break down.

A big concern are vibrations. Someone got troubles and one spacer stick inside the vacuum part was broken in the Oxford magnet. Only a replacement of the magnet solved the problem.

We transported our magnets (also unshielded and shielded ones through our elevator) Only our 600 MHz SpectroSpin magnet was the magnetic field shut down and was kept cool during the translation from different floors to ground. In nowadays this is absolutely forbidden and not practicable. But a decade ago it was possible.

Dust and dirt are the main problems. We also put some spectrometers down. We moved the electronics into a safe place and shielded the unshielded magnet with a wooden cabinet. During this time I filled the magnet once a week with liquid nitrogen and also in the correct times - also with liquid helium. Keeping all the systems running during this break. Its a big task to do this - but it worked.

Good luck!

Yours sincerely,

Have any of you undergone major building renovations and how did you handle this in your NMR facility? I'm would like some advice from those who have gone through this process.

I'm unclear just how gutted the building is planned to be, but I believe it will be a fairly major renovation including HVAC and chilled water, etc. so I'm not sure how the facility can coexist during the process.

This is many years ahead, but I would like to advise the department on the impact to the NMR facility which obviously can't just be moved to another temporary location.
