Sebastian;
Those type valves have only an o-ring that is slightly smaller in diameter
than the ball, friction alone keeps them sealed. I've had them blow during
fills. It might be possible that the ball is sitting on top of the o-ring
but more than likely the o-ring is cracked. If you haven't changed the
o-rings on top of your magnet in a while then I suggest you change all of
them up there. Get a large cork and remove the ball valve and inspect the
o-ring for cracks. If you find cracks then change them all especially the
NW o-rings in the dog-bones. We've had the same issue before on our recovery
system after which we went through all our magnets found other cracked
o-rings and subsequently changed them all.

[AMMRL] quench ball valve is leaking

Dear colleagues,

I am currently checking my helium recapture system and found out, that a very
old Oxford magnet in our system is not contributing at all to our helium
recovery. With a helium sniffer we could narrow it down to the quench ball
valve (see picture). This valve can be triggered very easily and I am wondering,
if it can be sealed at all with some grease and a new O-ring. Therefore, it
would be great to hear your expertise to this ball valve:
Did you have such a ball valve (exactly the same) and running a helium
recapture/recovery system?
If yes, how did you manage to get it not leaking?
Does anybody know if there are other quench valves on the market which you
can install at this connection or which can be installed between the
backpressure valve and the magnet?

Best regards,
Sebastian
