I have received lots of interesting replies to my question, thanks to
Jane, Martha, Hasan, Marcus and Jerry.

The suggestion I like best is to 3D print new button tops with the
labeling built-in. This would be virtually wear-proof. I will look into
this as we have a 3D printing setup here.

I will probably start though by making decals from sheets that dry white
on the un-printed areas. This will be easier than adding individual
characters from pre-printed decals.
