AMMRL: "routine" spectrometer upgrades wo NSF CRIF

Hi all,

With the "archiving" of the NSF CRIF:MU program, I'm guessing that many
of you in the US are similar to us in trying to figure out how to
upgrade routine spectrometers. In our case, as one example, we have a
21 yr old Bruker AC-300 (and yes, it's getting quite difficult to keep
this guy operational) that is important to our synthetic chemists. NIH
SIG is likely not a realistic option for this instrument, nor for us is
NSF MRI (with the two proposal per campus rule, it takes a much bigger
instrument proposal to get through our campus competition).

It would be helpful to hear how others are managing, or planning to
manage with similar upgrades (including mass specs and x-rays). Are you
utilizing special University funding, or gifts (we used a large gift a
couple years ago to update a couple instruments), or gathering money
from services rendered, or ...? I'll keep communications private when
requested, and summarize anonymous information to the group where OK.

Thanks,
Charlie
