Hi Neal

we leave specially one kind running. The ones with the attached nitrogen liquifier. This allows a system to run unattended until the next helium fill.

For all other cryogenically cooled probes I see no reason to shut them down if the instruments are still used by remote operation.
If the systems are completely unused I would shut it down as run time counts towards your next cryoplatform (coldbay) service interval.

Regards and be well

Clemens

And what about cold probes- is everyone going warm during a prolonged shutdown?

I’ve kept mine cold for the first 10 days of our campus research wind down period, but effective tomorrow, all non-essential research must cease, and no one will be allowed in the dept (except for moi 😊)

Hope every one continues to be well!

Neal

Subject: AMMRL: another facility shutdown question

Beyond cryogen fills, I'm wondering if systems can be left without shimming for up to several months, or if it may be wise to keep a sample locked in the magnet for field stability, etc.

Recently energized magnets especially might be prone to faster shim drift, but I wondered how long a stable system can be left before shims are too bad to recover using routine procedures.

Feedback welcome, and I will try to share results with the group (unless requested not to). Thanks.

Heather
