Dear AMMRL Colleagues,
A colleague approached me with the following question:
How often do you think we can switch cold probes?
I do have cold probes in my magnets and luckily I do not have to switch them all the time; only when there's a problem.
Switching room temperature probes is fine but I personally don't think it's a good idea to switch cold probes constantly because:
(a) it shortens the lifespan of the cold probe (How much? Not sure) due to the warmup/cool down cycles.
(b) it creates downtime (about 2 days including: warmup, switch probes, pump the system, cool down, re-shim and recalibrate the pulses...).
(c) it increases the probability of having something going wrong afterwards.
However, I do realize that if you only have one magnet then you have no choice.
So what's your experience/ feeling about this?
Thank you very much.
Genevieve
