(1990 Bruker system upgraded to Varian Mercury Plus Sept 2001)

ORGANIC CHEMISTRY LABORATORY COORDINATOR
(Science Instructional Technician II)
JOB SUMMARY
Under general direction, provide instructional and technical support for
the Chemistry Department's academic programs. The position's primary
responsibilities involve teaching selected organic chemistry laboratories,
mastering the use and maintenance of scientific instrumentation,
instructing and supervising students in the use of the instrumentation,
working with faculty to develop new experiments, and performing related
duties as assigned by the supervisor.
WORK SCHEDULE
Full-time, 12 months; M-F, 40 hours / week

Chair, Department of Chemistry
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
· Teach selected laboratory sections of Chem 251 and 354.
· Maintain CB 310 and CB 310C in good condition.
· Participate in the hiring process for and supervision of student
laboratory preppers and teaching assistants for Chem 251, 308, 354, 355,
454, 455.
· Learn how to operate instruments and computer software used in the
following courses: Chem 251, 308, 354, 355, 454, 455 as listed below.
· Will be responsible for the instruments and associated computing systems
for the above courses. Will set up, instruct and supervise users, create
instructional manuals, and perform routine adjustments, calibrations,
maintenance, and repairs of these instruments (including management of
accessories and consumable supplies) in coordination with the Instrument
Technician and Scientific Technical Services.
Instruments and associated computer systems which may be included in these
duties are:
300 MHz and 500 MHz NMR spectrometers (VNMR and gNMR software)
Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) instruments and gas
chromatographs (GC) (Varian Star Chromatography package)
Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometers in the organic chemistry
laboratory (OMNIC software)
Melting point apparatus
Polarimeter
Refractometer
· Coordinate experiments that use Scientific Technical Services facilities.
· Assist faculty in developing new experiments for the organic laboratories.
· Develop and implement (in consultation with Department Safety Officer)
safety procedures pertaining to above instruments.
· Monitor inventory and use of compressed gases and dry ice for above
instruments and coordinate ordering of these supplies with the Instrument
Technician.
· Provide back-up support for Department Instrument Technician.
