Hi all,
We here at IU have 4 research magnets for liquids, all Varians
running on SparcStation5s with 128MB or RAM. Users all have individual
accounts (no general user account) as the user logs are used for accounting
purposes. As it stands, the login is done from a text prompt. We've
noticed though, that the login and logout processes take a total of about 1
min., which seems inordinately long when the experienced users can collect a
1H spectrum in about 2 minutes. I've also noticed that when I login and run
VNMR from my PC through Exceed the total process takes about 10 seconds.
This led me to believe the bottleneck was in the startup of the Xserver, and
the time could be reduced by starting with the Xserver running, ie. using
xdm or Sun equivalent (I may be wrong here, I don't know in which cases the
Xserver is already running and in which it has to be started up. I'm trying
to figure this out.). Since CDE is Varian's interface of choice I thought
I'd start there. Firing up CDE (dtconfig -e) only increased the login and
logout times though. I suspect there's a bunch of unnecessary baggage being
started up by default and I'm in the process if purging stuff, but I thought
I might ask here and see what the experience of others yields.
So my questions are these:
1) What are the most efficient (timewise) login/out methods that the VNMR
users here have found?
2) Do you use xdm or gdm?
3) What's your preferred Window manager?
Any input would be greatly appreciated, and I'll be happy to
summarize after a week or two of trying out people's suggestions.
