We are currently having a new Bruker 500MHz NMR installed. However, we
often get short power outages at night. Therefore when I ordered the
instrument I asked for a UPS unit to cover for brief power outages(up to 15
mins). I expected that the UPS would allow us to maintain power to the NMR
and all the ancillary equipment required to ensure that spectrum
acquisition was not affected during a short <15 minute loss of power.
However, the UPS supplied by Bruker could not run both the NMR and our
compressor. Bruker now inform me that "they do not connect compressors (or
indeed BCU-05 cooling units) to a UPS because this would require a larger
UPS than most people would wish and would require a very heavy duty primary
mains supply".
I see no point in a UPS if it will not protect spectrum acquisition i.e.
maintaining air to the magnet for support, spinning and temperature control
etc. Or am I being unreasonable?
So has anyone got a set up where they have a UPS protecting their NMR
system including ancillary equipment for short periods? Or is this
impossible/not feasible?
If you protect your NMR with a UPS system please let me know what it protects.
Any advice and details of similar experiences will be greatly appreciated!
