Hi all, this is Sarah at Iowa State. Our solids system has been down for a =
few months, it is a very long story with a possible solution in sight, however
I need some spectrometer time in the interim.
I have a research group with many air-sensitive samples, they are amorphous
ceramics and glasses. They have been my major user of SSNMR time for the last
few years. They have had good luck not having oxygen contamination in their
samples with Bruker 4mm rotors and they have a fairly good cache of these.
They have not had as good of luck with the Phoenix double-end-cap rotors.
So, ideally, we are looking for someone with an excess of solids time with
a 4 mm Bruker probe. This group has long-run 29Si expts that take about 30-40
hours per sample, in addition to 31P that takes about 8-12 hours per sample.
I was charging them $6/hr at my facility. Obviously we are not looking for the
exact same rate, but something comparable plus staff labor in setting up
experiments. These are just single pulse/echo expts at 10-12 kHz
typically, no decoupling, dry air is fine, N2 is not required. My instrument
uses dry air and we have not had issues with moisture/oxygen contamination.
In summary:
1. You have excess instrument time on a SSNMR at 400-600 MHz, around 6-8 weeks
total available (does not have to be continuous)
2. You have a Bruker 4 mm probe capable of tuning to 29Si and 31P, double resonance
preferred for sensitivity especially for 29Si
3. You have the ability to receive shipped samples pre-packed in 4 mm rotors
4. You can charge in the ballpark of $6-10/hr plus staff time
We have been working with Cathy C. _at_ Wisconsin, but she does not have enough
instrument time to accommodate them, and NMRFAM has Phoenix-Varian style rotors.
Cathy mentioned a couple other places that might have time available so I just
wanted to cast a wider net.
Fingers crossed we will have solids again by the end of the year. Many thanks
