Hi AMMRL,
Thanks to all who replied! Here’s the summary of responses I received.
Sameer
We are planning on using Zoom for video conferencing during the experiment setup with the user (I set everything up and talk with them at the same time). I can also share the computer screen (via Zoom), and even let them control everything if needed.
As for chat, MS Teams, Slack or a simple IRC channel (the good old way!) could do it.
We bought two cheap-ish ($260 USD) Samsung tablets and made a user account so basically they can only run zoom. The tablet will always be logged into the training account on zoom. We are still working out the kinks but we plan to use them for training. Would also be nice if they can be used for people to pop in when they have a question. We plan to have them the NMR and Mass Spec labs to start.
You might run Slack on the workstation and on your phone/computer. It is a quick messaging service.
I have also used Teamviewer to login to windows computer from my Mac and see what’s going on from home. I haven’t done that in a while.
I only deal with a lot of undergrads—new users. So, in general their questions are more complex.
you could use

Maybe just have them message your phone from theirs?
Teamviewer from Bruker?

Subject: AMMRL: Messaging software for NMR assistance?
Hi AMMRL,
Does anyone have experience with messaging or ‘chat’ programs that can be installed on the NMR computers so that users can request assistance from staff? We already have VNC installed for remote access but I am looking for an easy way for our users to message me that doesn’t involve using the lab phone.
We are running Windows 7/10 and have multiple user accounts on each NMR, so I would ideally like something that can run as a Windows “service” and doesn’t require the user to do any extra steps (i.e. login to the messaging service). A bonus would be an iOS app so I can get notifications on my phone. But, I’ll gladly take any non-Windows solutions as well and compile them for a summary to AMMRL.
Many thanks,
Sameer
