Dear AMMRL community,

I would like to thank all of you who responded to my original inquiry
about a month ago. With special thank yous to those who elaborated on
details pertaining to moving a NMR facility including Brian Breczinski,
Tanya Whitmer, Martha Morton, Jerry Hirschinger, Andrew Fowler, Greg
Wylie, John Wilderman, George Furst, Janet Asper, Genevieve Seabrook,
Eric Paulson and Tara Sprules. I will summarize the responses as best I
can. Let me know if you see any discrepancies.

_Companies recommended for the move_:
Bruker - is the only company with charging leads to the Ascend magnet;
they will do a professional job for a professional price
MR Resources (Jon Webb) - recommended by 2 responders
Triangle Analytical (Tony Dorado) - recommended by 2 responders
NMR Associates (Dick Marsh) - recommended by 3 responders
CIS - Cryomagnet Instrument Service (John Davidson) - recommended by 5
responders

_new NMR facility room preparation_:
ensuring plumbing, electrical, gasses (compressed air and/or N2)
connected/ serviced to room properly
ensuring AC and HVAC properly operating (not much temp fluctuations,
near constant temperature)
IF using compressed air, making sure air dryer gets moved and
re-installed properly, pressure is at or above 80psi for Bruker NMRs
_Note_: Improperly set up services in new facility will delay and
elongate the moving process!

_figuring out path to new facility_:
how far do NMR systems need to be moved (within same building OR to
another building)
how smooth is the surface between locations (tarmac, asphalt, ramp,
bumps - will affect ease of move)
doorway widths (36" to 38" minimum) for crate to fit
sharp turns
elevator weight limit (rated to at least 2000lbs.); if moving magnets
cold, make sure elevator can handle weight of magnet AND cryogens

_Prior to move:_
benchmark or spec out/characterize systems and *save* the data before
decommissioning (so know what shooting for when systems re-energized)
vendor may do this, but highly recommended to do it yourself first
check for/find magnet shipping restraints (for warm move), also find
main charging leads and shorting plug (for de-energizing)

_magnet move_:
depending on distance and other obstacles, can be moved 'at field',
which is more common with newer shielded magnets
for a move between buildings, best option is to de-energize magnet prior
to move (needs to be 90% full with LHe)
_cold move_: will also depend on obstacles, bumps in the way; empty LN2;
low LHe level for not much sloshing
                     there is a risk with moving a magnet cold, but
won't need as much cryogens when re-energizing
_warm move_: cryogens will need to be pumped out, then shipping
restraints inserted; magnet will need to be crated or at least secured
to magnet crate bottom and moved with a pallet jack
IF magnet is old, will need to decide whether or not to "rebuild" it
(replace O-rings and seals)
hire a vendor for the magnet move!

_console move_:
a few recommended to do this "in house", will cost the U less money, but
may be painful for NMR facility manager
there are differing opinions in whether or not console needs to be
crated/boxed up; some thought that since the console is on wheels, it
can be wheeled/pushed to the new location; console needs to be moved
carefully and not shaken up too much
(most likely the crating depends if the move is between buildings or
withing one building and what kind and how many obstacles are between
the two sites)
VERY important to label all the cables and connections in the console
and between the console and the magnet
may take 1-2 weeks to re-cable everything in the new facility
good idea: use air line to blow out the dust accumulated over the years
when console is outside between buildings

_cryogens_:
will need a lot! magnet book will have specifics on exactly how much
needed for energization
make sure that the quote you negotiate with the vendor specifies who
pays for cryogens AND that cryogens in case of a quench upon
energization are also accounted for

_after the move_:
hopefully magnets come back to field (*I do have an old unshielded
Oxford 500, and in the new building a shielding plate is being installed
in the ceiling, we will see how the magnet interacts with this shielding
plate)
ensure that good lineshape will be achieved, re-map field (magnets can
have a large drift for a few months after energization)
ensure that specifications that were saved prior to move are met and
satisfactory
