AMMRL: Bill Ritchey

I first met Bill ca. 1976 when he visited my undergraduate institution,
SUNY Brockport, to visit Prof. Jim Eilers and his wife Dee. Bill had a
fondness for Black Diamond cheddar which Jim and Dee had obtained from
Canada for him. Only much later would I renew the acquaintance when I
joined the NMR profession.

I can still recall the 1976 impression he made on me - a jovial, bright
guy, enjoying his life and work. Jim (PhD, Case-Western) has just emailed
me "Prof. Ritchey was a true friend and mentor. A person I wanted to be
like!"

That's how I got into chemistry and then into NMR, by wanting to be like
people I had experienced, so I am a descendant of Jim Eilers and, thus, of
Bill Ritchie.

I wish I could remember the details of his after-banquet "singing." Was it
1999 ENC with Aksel and Alan Olsen (sp?) "No Business Like...?" This was
before every phone had a camera, so I wonder if there's a record of it.

We were all improved by our association with the delightful William
Ritchie. RIP.

Bill
