Hello
A number of people asked for a summary of responses to my questions about
LCD monitors and cryogens. First of all I'd like to thank everyone who took
the time to reply to my query. I had an amazing response - lots of very
useful suggestions.
1) LCD monitors:
Dwaine Thomas recommended the NEC 1810X and the
SGI 1600, but had poor results on an Indy with a Viewsonic VP181. Several
others also recommended the SGI monitor. On a SUN Ultra 10, the SUN monitor
was excellent, but expensive. Another NEC, a LA-1831 JMW 18 " monitor was
highly recommended (I wish). I also can recommend the SGI 15 " which I saw
at a demo, although it's just as expensive as the SUN.
2) A significant number of people are filling nitrogen only every other
week with absolutely no problem, so I've decided to go that route on the
newer magnets. I have no problem with supply so a late delivery is never an
issue.
As for helium, there's quite a difference of opinion. The majority pointed
out that the size of the supply dewar should dictate the schedule. Aside
from that, other considerations are - is the sensor accurate?, is helium
delivery always dependable?, is the helium boil off monitored? Many are
filling 10 - 25%, others make sure to fill at 40-50%. For myself, I think
I'll fill whenever I need 100 l, which will be every 2 months for the 500
WB and 3 months for the 600, with leftovers for the little guys.
Once again, thanks to everyone for your helpful comments!!
Cheers
Valerie
