I more or less agree with Andrew; from the standpoint of simply running the
system I have noticed little difference in performance between Linux and Windows
systems and the benefit of real IT support can be decisive. I would add that
I generally have not hosted any workflows on spectrometer control computers,
preferring to use these solely to acquire and store data that is then mirrored
to servers where workflows can be hosted.
The one caveat I would add here is that depending on your institution (or
sometimes the particular department within your institution) IT may insist
that your Windows boxes be centrally managed, which can sometimes result in
awkward circumstances like IT rebooting the computer in the middle of a 7-day
relaxation experiment. Most Windows management tools now have options to exempt
particular computers or allow users to control the reboot time within a certain
grace period (e.g. 15 days from update push). It is often just a matter of
setting this up with your IT contact.
If your computer will be locally managed then preventing Windows from updating
and rebooting on its own is fairly trivial, at least for Windows X; I have not
run any computers on Win 11.
