I've been asked to provide any updates about helium pricing or supply -
especially in the U.S., but data from other countries is also helpful.
Many of you have asked, but to the best of my knowledge the Strategic
Helium Reserve (the infrastructure) has not yet been sold. (Thanks for
the excellent sharing of stories at the recent ENC, by the way, by the
AMMRL group !)
By way of this message:
1. Can you let me know if any challenges obtaining helium in the past year,
and if you're on allocation (receiving less than 100% of what you order
or request)
2. If you feel like doing so, there are people who would like to keep track
of pricing-just disclosing here that what you tell to me can be made anonymous
(but would prefer to state a region or a state and if a company or an educational
institution).
Note: this would be (typically) a price you pay per liter of helium including
surcharges for delivery, dewars, etc. You don't need to disclose that contractual
price between your institution and the vendor. For example: here at WashU, our
vendor charges us a price, but I don't pay the vendor, but rather pay my internal
departmental helium bill. This is helpful, because I don't have to know the vendor
price (which can sometimes be a sticky issue.)
The information you provide - and especially stories you can share - have been
very helpful in efforts at raising awareness in Congress about this issue. There
are new programs to provide liquefaction equipment via agencies such as NIH and NSF,
and we can thank our AMMRL community (!) for being a presence in those discussions!

I learn. Tell me if you need the data to be anonymous.
