Colleagues,
From the American Institute of Physics today, FYI #99 -
Senate Appropriators Boost Education Department MSPs
On July 20, the Senate Appropriations Committee passed its FY 2007
appropriations bill for the Departments of Labor, Health and Human
Services, and Education (S. 3708). This bill would increase funding
for the Education Department's Mathematics and Science Partnership
(MSP) program...
Recently the House Science subcommittee heard testimony from experts
on MSPs, notably Elaine Seymour (google SENCER), making the case for
increasing support for MSPs. All those testifying asked Congress,
"Please, please, please administer these through the National Science
Foundation and, oh in the name of God please, please don't do it
through the same egregious Education Department that brought us No
Child Left Behind."
Or words to that effect.
Now the NSF budget for MSPs has been zeroed and the money goes to
guess who. Immediate comment from educator Yakov Smirnoff was, "What
a country!"
