Thanks for all the replies. This generated some requests for my
posting the solution. Tom Dickinson's reply cannot be improved upon
except I will add one comment in a different color:

The units are removed by pulling out until it hits the mechanical stop. Then
depressing both tabs very near the unit to release from the guide. I use a
small screwdriver to spare my fingers.
Once removed from the cabinet, place on a table top to dismantle.
1. Remove all top cover screws, remove cover to expose the fans etc.
2. remove the 4 screws ( underside) holding the heat sink in place. Slide
two inches forward. This will allow fans to be removed freely from back of
unit.
3. remove all four screws holding each of the fans in place.
( as a Varian service rep, I would typically replace both fans at the same
time while I have the unit open.
4. prepare the new fans by Tapping the 4 fan holes with 10-24 tap to
accommodate the screws. We cheated and used the screws to cut the threads.
5. Cut the AC wires to the old fans, remove the fans, strip the wires back,
add heat shrink sleeves and resolder in the new fans. Shrink the heat shrink
material on the connection with a heat gun.
6. Reinstall fans with fan screws, add tie wraps to prevent AC wire from
tangling up with fan blades.
7. re-attach 4 screws of the heat sink.
8. install cover.
9. Slide into console and re-connect.

Fans are 115Vac, Be sure to install with air blowing out the back. I
said in an earlier post that I had Papst AC fans left over from my
VXR days. They are in my AMT cabinets now!

Thanks so much. I don't think I could do my job without this wonderful group.

Bill
