Thank you to everyone who took the time to respond, I really appreciate
it. I apologize that I have not posted this sooner. Last week I had
over 100-samples submitted (and no auto-sampler) and everyone wanted
their samples to be #1 priority. Sounds familiar, doesn't it?!?! If
only I could hang an "NMR is closed until further notice" sign, that
would be divine! :-)
For those who wanted to know when I found out what was wrong, I haven't
had a chance to try the suggestions I received. If I do happen on
something, I will contact those who specifically asked.

Following is a summary of the responses I received:

I've seen it before, but can't recall doing anything special to fix it.
Try the normal stuff: restarting VNMR, rebooting the computer, or try a
different user account. I don't think it would be console related. If
you reboot the computer again, do an "fsck -y", just to be sure.
I don't think it is serious.

We've encountered this problem here some with our Inova 500MHz on
VNMR6.1C , but usually a reboot resolves it. The couple of times that a
reboot hasn't fixed it, we've reset the console CPU and the computer,
and that has cleared it up.

It sounds like the MSR board or automation board is partially hung. It
thinks that it is in an acquisition status. There are patches for this.
Do you have the latest patch loaded? Did you get a successful setacq
after loading the patch?

We had various things cause buttons to go missing, maybe one of these
common reasons may help.
1) corrupted global file in vnmrsys
2) permissions on vnmrsys and/or on vnmr directories. (most common
reason)

I think I can help you out. Essentially you need to reboot the console.
This includes the "Acqproc" command.
Resetting two boards (CPU and Acq. Data Controller) and then retyping
Acqproc again to reinitiate the system.

I meet the similar problem before. You can close exit vnmr window (or
close all 4 nmr windows) and then open it again. if some user does not
close all windows and then open vnmr again, some window will be
repeated. Or your acqi window is open and minimized.
If this does not favor your problem, try to type su acqi to kill the
process and then reopen vnmr.

Login as vnmr1 and check the config. Because there are still Mercury and
Gemini systems out there without computer control of eject/insert and
spinning, there is an option in the config dialog.
May be this option is off.

did you reboot the SMR board too?
the best way to reboot the INOVA is to power off the digital/RF in the
lower right part of the console, or to power off the MERCURY console.
After waiting a few seconds power on again. All boards should now reboot
in the correct order.

Not sure I can fix your problem, but for what it is worth we experience
a similar problem on our Unity-300. The problem seems to be related to
mixing the two modes of action, so if you just use the buttons all the
time it's OK, or if you just use the "e" and "i" commands from the
keyboard all the time that's OK too, but if you start mixing them then
you get problems.
My "workaround" is to disable the "i" and "e" commands by replacing them
with macros of the same names which just throw up a message saying
"Please use the buttons in the acqi window". OK, so I haven't fixed the
problem but at least I don't have people coming to me every day to tell
me that the buttons aren't working.
