Maximization of noesy1d

Is it a good idea to increase the pulse delay (d1 on Varian VNMRJ) when
doing noesy1d? I've read that degassing the sample will help the NOE
and that determining the 90-deg pulse for the particular sample is
necessary for best results. Am I missing anything else?

(Obviously I'm a neophyte, but I'm intrigued with the capabilities of
our new instrument---Unity/Inova 400MHz---and wish to learn them and
pass them on to other users here.)
