I believe you can buy a compressor directly from Sumitomo. That is certainly the impression I got from talking to a sales person at SHI Cryogenics recently. I believe they are only selling the FA 70 now, which is the replacement for the CNA 61, but they have jumpers, so as I understand it, you can use the FA 70 outdoor unit with either indoor unit.

The issue with a rebuilt compressor is whether or not the entire compressor capsule was replaced, or only the oil was replaced. Bruker has them rebuilt by replacing the entire capsule, so there is no possibility of contamination in the oil. A standard rebuild only replaces the oil, so contamination may remain.
We tried a rebuilt compressor from Cool Pair Plus - a company which by all accounts does excellent work. The cost was around $3000 and I installed it myself as you suggest. It only lasted a year before it caused problems. It was replaced by a Bruker rebuild which has not been a problem ($15K plus installation). You can get one brand new from Bruker for about $5K more.
IF I could find a distributor to sell a NEW Sumitomo, then I might try it.

I read with interest the email summary from Bob Berno about cryoprobe compressors. In this summary it is implied that it is possible to source the air-cooled compressor independently of Bruker and install it yourself. This would be a Sumitmo FA-70 outdoor unit to replace a CNA-61 unit, for a Bruker cryoprobe. If anyone has experience of doing this, please could you let me know how it went? I suspect all that is needed is to plumb and wire-up the unit as in the old one, and then do some "warm cycles".
