AMMRL: Bruker samplechanger communication error

Good morning,

We are having some problems with the BACS samplechanger on our Bruker spectrometer while running IconNMR, and I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced a similar issue.

A few times per week, a sample fails to be picked up by the samplechanger arm, and we see an error message "Sample Changer Error : Error : timeout <BACS off, sleeping, or not connected>." The instrument then moves on to the next queued sample, injects it into the magnet, and runs it without a problem - no need for us to reset the BACS. The error doesn't seem to correlate with a certain spinner or slot in the carousel. If we re-queue the sample, it runs just fine.

We have observed this problem at two different points during the process of changing a sample. Sometimes, the samplechanger will retrieve one sample from the magnet, replace it in the carousel, and then, once IconNMR has moved on to the next sample, give the error. Other times, it will retrieve a sample, replace it in the carousel, allow IconNMR to move on to the next sample, advance the carousel to the appropriate position, and then give the error.

We've tried replacing the serial cable that connects the BACS to the console, as well as adjusting the pneumatic switches that control the speed at which the samplechanger arm moves up and down - error still occurs.

Any thoughts? We would be grateful for any information about similar problems in other labs, or advice that could help shed some light on this problem.

Thanks,
