Same Vendor for 2nd Instrument?

NMR Folks,

We have had a Varian Unity Plus 400 since 1994 and have been very
pleased with its reliability and the stability of the Sun workstation. It
is the only NMR on campus. We intend to purchase a 500 (possibly 600).

There are numerous advantages for obtaining a 2nd Varian. Local
user training, local administrator training, vendor-provided user courses,
sharing of data, and coordinated service visits (none so far with the
current 400) would be enormously facilitated with same-vendor instruments
sharing identical operating systems.

So, what do you folks feel about a small department in the
"Outback" with limited resources purchasing a second spectrometer from a
different vendor? I believe it would be a mistake. I would really
appreciate you comments including those which might change my mind.

         Thanks to all.

Ed Waali
