Let's be optimistic and assume that there is no hardware problem.
On Aspect 3000 systems with a SCM unit for the shims, there is
sometimes a problem after installing a new version of software. For
the shims, the software creates a SHIMATRX.999 file which may cause
problems with executing shim commands in the new version of software.
As an easy attempt, you might try deleting the SHIMATRX.999 file and
letting the new version of software create its own.
