I used IDL to do both imaging and high res data processing when I was at
MMRRCC at University of Pennsylvania. It works fine and the language is not
that hard to learn. It is similar to the good old "Basic"
compiler/interpreter with many built-in functions (nDFFT, contour plot
subroutines, etc. Every students and postdocs know how to use it, so it is
not that hard to learn. The only hard part of off-line data processing is
that you do need to figure out the format of your data.
